Where Curiosity Began: Calista’s First Founding Members in Manitowoc

Every great journey has a beginning. For The Calista Initiative, an important chapter began on March 28, 2026, at Manitowoc Public Library, where four young explorers participated in a Curiosity in Motion pilot class.

The program introduced students to marine and freshwater science through hands-on activities designed to encourage curiosity, experimentation, and discovery.

Students explored buoyancy and density by designing clay boats and testing their ability to float. Through trial and error, they discovered how the shape of a boat influences its ability to displace water and carry weight.

The young explorers also experimented with a Cartesian diver, observing how changes in pressure affect buoyancy and cause a small diver to rise and sink inside a sealed bottle.

Beyond the experiments, students learned about careers in marine and freshwater science, discovering opportunities in research, exploration, engineering, and conservation.

But the most meaningful outcome of the pilot was something that extended far beyond the classroom.

These four young participants became The Calista Initiative's first Founding Members, helping establish the foundation for a growing educational program.

Their journey would eventually take them from learning scientific concepts to sharing their knowledge with others, demonstrating the power of hands-on education and the confidence that comes from discovery.

What began with four curious young minds became an important part of Calista's story—and a reminder that even the smallest beginnings can lead to something extraordinary.

Curiosity Runs Deep.
