Exploring Careers Beneath the Surface: Calista Visits Homestead High School

April 14, 2026 | Homestead High School | Two Classroom Sessions

The Calista Initiative brought the fascinating world of marine science and underwater exploration into the classroom at Homestead High School on April 14, 2026, introducing students to real-world career opportunities beneath the surface.

Across two interactive sessions, Founder and Lead Educator Scott Bartels shared firsthand experiences from scuba diving, underwater exploration, and marine education, helping students discover how science, technology, and curiosity come together in careers connected to our oceans and Great Lakes.

Connecting Classroom Learning to Real-World Exploration

Students explored how scientists and explorers study underwater environments, including the technology used to map the ocean floor, investigate shipwrecks, and understand marine ecosystems.

Through photographs, presentations, personal experiences, and classroom discussions, students were introduced to opportunities in marine science, underwater research, diving, and exploration.

The sessions encouraged students to ask questions, consider unfamiliar career paths, and recognize how interests in science and technology can lead to extraordinary experiences.

A Special Guest Brings Maritime History to Life

The presentations also featured guest speaker Todd Gordon, President of the Wisconsin Marine Historical Society, who shared maritime artifacts and firsthand insights into Great Lakes maritime history and shipwreck exploration.

His participation helped connect modern marine science and underwater technology with the rich maritime heritage of the Great Lakes.

Together, the presentations demonstrated how exploration, history, science, and education intersect beneath the water's surface.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Explorers

While The Calista Initiative is known for its hands-on freshwater and marine science activities, programs like this demonstrate its commitment to reaching students across different age groups.

By introducing high school students to real-world careers and experiences, Calista encourages young people to look beyond traditional career paths and imagine where their curiosity might take them.

Curiosity Runs Deep.
